I am planning to come to New York at the end of May cause I am a huge fan of Polaroid so I want to attend the Polacon. It will be my first time in NYC and the US actually. Do you have any suggestions on where to stay that is nice and not super expensive? Also any suggestions on what to visit?:)

As a U.S.-American I highly suggest not visiting the U.S. at this time as it is dangerous for queer, critical, and left-leaning people. Also spending money there would end up (partially) supporting the rise of American fascism.

I highly suggest once you know the area checking out what subway lines will bring you there either if you’re not staying right in that neighborhood. I saw that it was in Brooklyn but unsure exactly where. Just be aware, while the subway is 24 hours on the weekends and at night there’s a lot less service.

@luca995 from what I understand there aren’t a ton of Airbnb‘s because they got very strict on the rules. I’m sure you can find a decent one that’s not too far.

Highly recommend citizenM if you’re traveling solo. They’re in very convenient areas of the city and relatively affordable compared to other options. While you’re here, be intentional about where you spend your money. A lot of democratic cities are experiencing real upheaval under Trump, especially around immigration and civil rights, but NYC has remained comparatively resilient and welcoming. Manhattan is great for photography and best explored on foot or by bike. The West Side along the Hudson, SoHo, Nolita, the Lower East Side, and Midtown at night are especially strong visually. Just be mindful of your belongings on the subway and in high foot-traffic areas, especially if you’re carrying camera gear. Check out Time Out New York and Thrillist for current events, exhibitions, restaurants, and things to do that might align with your interests. And don’t over-plan too much, the best parts of the city are found when you get lost and wander.
