Dating has never been easy. It is just an illusion that some time ago it was easier, but it was not. I am not gonna deny that some things were easier then and other things are easier nowadays. Speaking about saying “simple I love/like you” is not as simple as you think or at least it depends on how you see these words and what is the meaning of them. In my opinion, if you say things like these, then be ready to take responsibilities for them.
