I explored for the first time writing songs that weren't about my own personal experience. 'Stop Pretending You're Happy' is one of those songs. A call to evaluate your romantic relationship. People often slowly suffocate within marriage, staying out of fear, shame, habit, or hope that things will return to how they used to be. Sometimes the thought of "starting over" is deemed too much work. The veil in the imagery is emblematic of the soft prison a marriage can become.
