I’ve just finished writing my first novel — 1891. It’s a strange feeling to finally be able to say that! I’d really love some honest opinions, so I thought I’d share the synopsis here. Synopsis Porto, present day. A murder sets off an investigation that, at first, seems to belong entirely to the present. But the clues soon begin to point elsewhere — towards events separated by more than a century, and a mystery whose origins can be traced back to 1891. As the investigation unfolds, paintings, documents and almost imperceptible signs reveal unexpected connections to the work of Portuguese artist Aurélia de Sousa and to a story spanning different periods and places. From Porto to Seville and Rome, cities shaped by art, history and memory become pieces of a mystery whose roots seem far older than the crime that has brought it back to the surface. The narrative moves between different periods, reconstructing historical events and settings through careful research, while elements of the fantastic gradually blur the boundary between what can be explained and what seems to lie beyond reason. Past and present begin to mirror one another. Works of art become witnesses, cities preserve traces of what happened, and events separated by decades reveal unexpected connections. The closer the investigation comes to the truth, the harder it becomes to know where History ends and the inexplicable begins. Part thriller, part historical novel, with elements of the fantastic, 1891 brings fiction and historical research together in a journey through Porto, Seville and Rome, where art, memory and mystery intertwine. Some truths remain buried in the past. Others always find a way back. So… honest opinions, please! Based on the synopsis alone, would you want to read it? What grabs you — and what doesn’t?
