I think it’s a huge win for independent filmmaking and distribution, and for something of this subject matter to sweep like this is also quite impressive. I was able to see all the nominations for best picture except Wicked, and it did strike me as having the most authentic performances and really kept me captivated the entire time. They put a lot of work into the representation of sex workers in Anora and the confluence of money and class in that system.

@jordangauger I hear that it’s a win for indie filmmaking— good point. I thought the story was predictable though and nothing really novel or surprising. I could tell how it would play out as soon as they met. That being said, I feel like it was a shallow pool of nominees this year.

I think the problem was that it is a very glamorized, literally quite unanchored in reality story sure it could happen like this, but I doubt it I wasn’t convinced, and the main character never reached any real depth

@ohenriko yeah definitely, the only people I’ve seen call Anora a fully fledged, multidimensional character are (cishet) men - but that’s not the feeling I got when I left the cinema haha

It was a big victory for the Mr Ziegfeld types, very My Fair Lady. Also ref elected in Adrien Brody giving possibly the longest speech in Oscar history about a fictitious architect archetype.
