As Robert Burns wrote, “The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” (Paraphrased from the poem “To a Mouse”). I think a plan is less important than just a general direction or sense of purpose. My life has largely been the result of fortunate accidents and knowing when to take advantage of an opportunity. I am not where I “planned to be” when I finished my first university degree; I’m someplace better than that!

There’s a song in the inspiring musical “Little BigThings” that has the chorus: “And shit happensLeast when you'd expect. And only once it's far behind you can you see what happens next. The world can be confusing, but soon you'll understand. Trusting every turn ever taken was always part of the plan.”
