I started watching Looking almost by accident.
Iβd just finished another very hyped series thatβs currently dominating pop culture spaces, and I found myself strangely conflicted. I understand the appeal. Itβs emotionally immediate, addictive, and designed to be consumed quickly.
But on a structural and narrative level, it feels thin. Superficial. Built around trope recognition rather than genuine exploration.
After talking with some friends, I started Looking, and the contrast was immediate.
Looking is invested in character interiority, contradiction, and observation. Its writing allows space for silence, hesitation, and unresolved tension. People exist outside of romance, with desires that evolve and identities that arenβt reduced to who theyβre sleeping with. The show isnβt chasing payoff.
What frustrates me isnβt that people enjoy the shallow thing. Enjoyment is valid.
Itβs that we collectively elevate work that offers so little psychological and thematic depth, while stories willing to engage with complexity remain secondary.
