Yes, but there are so many types of experience. White patriarchy tends to describe that way narrowly. I imagine with this being passed down via family you have unique skills and breadth — sounds more like this person’s own imposter syndrome or insecurity shows up. Great art is great art 🌱

So many creative pursuits and careers don’t need qualifications behind them, it’s your talent, knowledge, experience that they are paying for! But yes, often feel the impostor syndrome when comparing myself to others and feeling that what I do isn’t as good or as informed as what they do… but so much about art is subjective!

only in the context of credentials during hiring. i’ve worked with plenty of degreed individuals that are basically useless because their skills are school, not work. i know my work experience is much more valuable than a piece of paper that says i can write an essay, and any employer that gets hung up on the degree is not for me to consider anyway. truly their loss. i also find it cringe when anyone brags about having their degree, because 9 times outta 10 they aren’t even using it for their field and are in way more debt than i can imagine. like congrats you got sold a dream hun.

Every. Single. Day. There’s a chasm between knowing I’m happy with a finished product, and knowing whether other people will like it. And it’s taking time for me not to be beaten up by that. In a field where personal taste is as heavily weighted as technical ability, paper credentials mean very little. You’re the expert, so if you’re happy with it, it’s good.
