@casbahmike She was the sister of Felix Mendelssohn but because she was a woman she was prohibited from composing

@danielturner Rachmaninov, one of my first loves. The G sharp prelude (op 32, no.12) is just perfection for me. Also love his transcription of the Bach partita for violin, and Isle of the Dead. Actually one of my most intense musical experiences was a live performance of The Bells. It really got to me. Absolutely needs to be experienced in the concert hall.

@timmy_tamz Excellent choices - Prokofiev’s 5th was my gateway in to classical music as a teenager and I still love to hear it live, always a thrill. I recently heard the sixth live for the first time and that was sublime.

Ólafur Arnalds at the Palladium is still to this day one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to ☺️

Studied trumpet at conservatory. 🎺 Played Trumpet concerto from Arutiunian, Variations on Scarlatti’s theme from Bitsch, tried Trumpet concerto from Haydn and Hindemit’s Trumpet sonata… and many more 😅 Fav composer is Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959), a Czech who emigrated to France / the US. In my opinion, he masterfully combines the Czech rhythms and melodies with French delicacy and softness of the music. ❤️ Can recommend some pieces, if anyone’s interested.

@danielturner I’m sure it will! People enjoy classical music, even if they don’t know it, such as in movie soundtracks, in a restaurant or boutique, during tv coverage of an international sporting event like the Olympics, etc. And all classical music composed before the 1920s is in the public domain so it can played or recorded by anyone! You play piano, yes?

@timmy_tamz so, where shall I start 😂 Kitchen revue is a funny banger, Les Rondes is nice as well, Chamber music No. 1 and some Nocturnes as well… The Plays of Mary is my favourite opera from him. Must also mention Concerto for Oboe and Small orchestra (that one with Heinz Holliger as the oboist is the 🔝 recording on YT, just heartwarming) and Double concerto for two string orchestras, piano and timpani 😅
