Oh no :(( I’ve been coming across a lot of such reviews from within the lgbt+ community and that makes me sad; the film looked so good in principle :(

@hassan it was bad.. I left the cinema angry.. it could’ve had the potential to showcase something truely intimate and interesting, but it ended up being a story about an avoidant, gaslighting, manipulative person that took advantage of someone vulnerable and without personal boundaries. A completely wrong approach to what kink is and can be.

I’m not so sure. SPOILER!! The movie does explore a toxic kink relationship but I think it did an adequate job of not portraying their dynamic as representative of the subculture. We get a glimpse of the other relationships in the biker group with a similar dynamic that are more stable. He doesn’t leave the relationship of his own volition but by the end of the movie, the main character continues to explore his submissive desires but with a clearer understanding of himself, his boundaries and the confidence to enforce them. Seemed almost like a cautionary tale. A lesson in navigating a submissive role but not completely losing yourself in it. All the kink honestly seemed secondary and I never got the sense that it was what was wrong with their relationship. More so that it was being used as a cover for emotional avoidance. I’ve seen worse.

@temi I see your points and I agree to a certain point, but I just felt there was a lack of addressing the toxicity by the movie itself, to me the setup the movie was trying to make us believe was an unconventional love story, even in the marketing that’s what is being sold as, but I was just honestly uncomfortable the whole way through, and I am very much not a prude, I just felt like it completely missed the mark. Also it wouldn’t have taken a lot to address the problematic dynamics in the movie, but to me it seemed careless and a bit lazy that they didn’t 🤷🏼‍♂️ and maybe I’m also just tired of seeing the handsome white man getting away with anything without any consequences

@allmyfriendsaresuperheroes That’s certainly true 😂. I can’t say I wasn’t a bit dissatisfied.Definitely not the steamy kinky love story we were promised. To endure the awkwardness of their relationship just for the guy to run after giving us the slightest bit of hope. I guess that was part of the point 😅, idk. They should have let Colin destroy that stupid bike at least.

@allmyfriendsaresuperheroes Did you read the book it’s based on, Box Hill? Compared to that, I’d say the movie is actually good. They changed quite a lot… In the book, it feels like there’s almost no conversation between the two at all. Not even a smile or anything remotely heartwarming. I read the book first and watched the movie afterwards ;) In my opinion, they managed to create something really good from that story. Nevertheless, I still have to admit that I can’t really understand the behavior of either of the two protagonists.
