It only works if you have similar goals and outlook and are very patient. We also were not in anything open after we became exclusive and continued to date for 2 years while I was in China and he was here in NYC. Finally our plans aligned and I moved here to study and he was about to graduate and I moved in with him and it’s been 9 years living together. ❤️

@jcp yeah, I would echo those sentiments, at least that would be the way I’ve been used to thinking. Long distance seems very hard and I think that @montiel makes a good and important point in that it could potentially work if both had similar goals, outlook, and a lot of patience. @montiel you’re story is super interesting and I’m happy it worked out like that for you!

I was in a long distance relationship for 5 years. Logistically it’s very expensive and if you don’t have a long term plan it starts to eat away at your mental health. It can be incredibly lonely being alone but not being single. I’ll never do it again.

@justsammorris I can totally see how it would wear on one’s mental health. Even long distance in the same country can be rough, something I personally experienced. But the idea of dating internationally has always intrigued me but don’t know if I could sustain it mentally.

@johnnyb_92 really good communication. Being honest and realistic about the situation. Booking trips to see each other well in advance so you had something firm to look forward to. Lots of cam calls and sex.

I’d say it only works if there are mutually agreed goals and boundaries. Sometimes language is a big barrier, and bureaucratic issues can damage the relationship, as logistics take a huge part in how you’ll make the relationship work. It’s not as romantic as people think 😂
