Going home to the states (I live in France) to be around my Mormon family for 6 weeks starting at the holidays. I came out to them about 1.5 yrs ago. Many of them voted for Trump. It hurts me that they voted for someone who would hurt not just me as a woman & a queer person, but immigrants esp. too.

I know it is dramatic, but part of me doesn’t want to look them even in the face. I am non confrontational but I post almost daily on socials for awareness of what ICE is doing. They’ve never apologized or admitted anything. I am going home because I do believe in love transcending political differences. It is just hard because they feel like differences in integrity and morality and respect ❤️‍🩹

It’s not dramatic at all. You’re right, these are very integral, foundational values you disagree on. It’s MILD to say you find being around them painful and difficult. My dad’s side are fire and brimstone Catholics who all voted against same sex marriage in our referendum. Now they complain they never see me but it’s because I feel a pain similar to you. It’s hard being around family even when they’re making harmless small talk because underneath the smiles you know what they believe. Solidarity 🫂 six weeks is a long time, look after yourself and vent to us here. We got you.

@anseo appreciate your words so much. And even my «safer » people who could care less if I’m queer or left the church, they roll their eyes at my focus and intensity on these subjects. I feel like I am being called dramatic or overzealous, but for me, any erosion of human rights or mistreatment of humans in a supposed democratic society needs us to use our voices and efforts, loudly and quickly. So I just feel like a major black sheep hahaha.
