Oh my gosh I relate to this so hard. It’s really tough because HP was my imagination universe and is connected to my childhood and teen years in a big way. It’s really sad to me that something that had such a positive effect on me growing up is now funding a massive bigot/transphobe. While I won’t be buying anything that supports them anymore, I still cherish the fun memories and creativity of my past 😊

I get it, and your anger is justified, but don’t burn her books! Book burning is what religious fanatics, authoritarian regimes, and Nazis do, not people who believe in the free expression of ideas. Besides, the books have already been bought and they’ve already received royalties. Give them away or donate them, especially if you can identify someone who wants to read them! That way, they won’t have to buy them, and she won’t get royalties. Finally, once an author publishes a book, it is no longer theirs; it belongs to the readers! If you found entertainment or even in inspiration in the books, then there is something of value in them, perhaps something that Rowlings themself didn’t realize was there when she wrote it. Also, join me in referring to Rowling with gender-neutral pronouns! Maybe it will catch on! I’m sure they’ll love that! 😂

@casbahmike i’m afraid i have to disagree, i don’t really separate the artist from the work like that. the harry potter universe was a product of their imagination and values, so it’s not enough for me to just imagine trans people at hogwarts. it’s not like they just tweeted something transphobic once and moved on, the last decade they’ve made anti-trans activism their entire life. they’re dangerous and manipulative. i wouldn’t call them smart, but they’re definitely not your average bigot. i wouldn’t share their books, especially not with children. call me an extremist, but that rich white person has gone out of their way to actively harm one of the most excluded and at-risk groups in society, and they had absolutely no reason to do it, like a real sociopath. i can’t see the characters in the same way anymore. also, rituals are deeply personal. burning your ex’s letters doesn’t make someone a nazi, oops. thanks for commenting, by the way, i love the pronouns idea.

Actually, on a fundamental level, we agree! Rowling had proven to be a bully, obsessed, like most transphobic people, with an issue that probably doesn’t concern her at all! I doubt she knows any trans or gender non-conforming people, at least not well. And if burning their books is a cathartic ritual that helps you achieve serenity, then you absolutely should do that! But there is a difference between burning books and burning letters, journals, or even one’s personal papers. As I said, if you burn the books rather than donating them or something like that, then people who still want to read them will buy them, thus putting money in their pocket and raising sales figures. Also, all open fires contribute to air pollution, and with modern book-binding, chemical processes may be involved. So at least cover you nose and mouth if you choose burning.

@kavi I’ve been thinking about this exchange and just wanted to say it is really nice to engage with someone who disagrees without being nasty. Seems to be one of the things that separates this app from many others! Of course we both agree that Rowling is a bully! It’s particularly disgusting when someone as rich and powerful as her picks on a group a much maligned minority! It sometimes feels like the bullies have taken over and are trying desperately to rewind history to darker days!
