i’ve been thinking a lot about gay centred spaces lately, how they’re gradually fizzling out with the advent of social media…under the weight of this financial destitution we’re all enduring. functionally, it makes sense to me why they’re disappearing…with the destigmatization of the community and the normalisation of hookup culture, there isn’t really a tangible ‘need’ for them to exist anymore i suppose. a lot of gay bars and clubs are almost wholly dependent on the facilitation of (extortionately priced!) alcohol…that’s why more innocuous venues aren’t particularly viable business ventures, they can’t cover the costs to keep things running. but it’s sad to me; we’re gradually losing so much history, culture, community…these historic spaces are slowly just turning into unremarkable buildings…our community is being filtered down into personally curated digital spaces. (ironic, lol) i know it’s not the end of the world, i know we’ll adapt to whatever hurdles or changes are thrown at us…but i guess i just romanticise that old world, or maybe…my idea of it.
