Counterintuitive but going to happy hours and not drinking feels weirdly liberating and is a great way to talk to folks

@bearbear yeah, you learn so much from people - a new way of thinking, a shared experience, or just general chitchat, anything to strike up a convo, sometimes it’s awkward, but 90% of the time it’s a hoot and we both leave smiling ☺️ I always get their name, especially if they’re not wearing a name badge, and make sure I say it when leaving. Can you tell I’ve worked in a public facing job for over 20 years? 🫣

@bearbear you can join a pre organized one or do your own. It helps to have a theme like finding the best donut in town

@ben_marchy and, if you’re not in a place with plentiful mass transit, you can be the designated driver, which gives you a chance to talk to people on the way.

A lot of people have made good suggestions. Classes are a great way to meet people, whether it’s an exercise class at your gym, continuing education from a local university (it’s SO LIBERATING to take a class just out of interest and no worry about grades), an art class, or anything like that. Intermissions at live music, theater or other performing arts events are a great place to meet people, and the event gives you something to talk about. The activities of groups sponsored by your faith community (if it’s a liberal one) are good, as are volunteer opportunities. I used to live in a city that had a group that met regularly to remove invasive plants for the river banks. If your city has an LGBTQ+ community center, check out their activities. Some of the local theaters in Boston have an LGBTQ+ night during the opening week. In many cities June is a great month for sober opportunities around Pride. Theme parks and sports teams have Pride days/nights . Theme tricky part is finding out about them!

Look for some groups doing things you’re interested in.
