One of two grad school applications replied back. Rejected on the basis of competition… Fair, really struggled with the cover letters, so I’m not surprised…. Still sucks though. One more school left to hear back from, meanwhile I’ll continue to look at other degrees in theatre and art…

I struggle with cover letters and personal statements, too. I was raised to be modest and in life I’ve learned that I’d rather surprise by exceeding expectations than disappoint because I exaggerated. Yet I’m great at writing recommendations and at editing other people’s cover letters. I have two recommendations you may want to try. 1) If you have a trusted, thoughtful friend who is also a good writer, ask them to write you a letter of recommendation and then adapt it to your voice as a cover letter. 2) Write your own letter then work with someone else to improve it. 3) You could even try something like Grammarly or putting your letter into ChatGPT or another AI with some good prompts regarding tone. Be very careful with this, though. Admissions offices have found ways to recognize machine-generated text, so you can use it for help, but don’t rely on it.
