Has anyone read “The Picture of Dorian Gray”? If so, did you also find it awfully boring in the beginning? Wilde is setting up the story and getting the scene set for action I’m assuming, but his prose leaves me wanting for more. The pacing is also slow. Please tell me it gets better 🥹

@jaren he did!? That’s crazy! I guess they had pretty good gaydar since he alludes to homosexual behavior between the men. But also… going to prison for alluding to gay shit is CRAZY

@carlo that’s impressive! Not everyone would even attempt to read a book that isn’t in their native language. Did you enjoy it?

when you finish Dorian Gray, try ‘Teleny’ an erotic novel attributed to him but possibly co written by him and his friend Charles Hirsch. It’s very erotic and at the time considered pornography… Published in Paris after Oscar got out of jail. Possibly a decade after it was written. It’s not attributed 💯 to him due to its content… You will not get bored reading this one. It was truly Oscar’s revenge to the rotten Victorian society that got him so unfairly incarcerated… Oscar is the true Martyr Saint of our community and we should celebrate him with orgasmic fireworks 🎇💦

i guess it’s a style thing… i loved it, but if you don’t like the way it’s written you probably won’t like the rest too much

@mostlyval I think you’re right. However, everyone has convinced me to finish it so I’ll check in when I do. The chismoso in me is kind of loving the drama, so that will probably carry me through the book 😅

@nolan.t.brown i think it’s fun, tbh, just enjoy that it’s super rich in the description of you can. there is a lot of meaning layered in there. and if you ultimately hate it… close it, no one’s gonna fault u for it.

@mostlyval I think I needed the push to keep reading because I’m starting to enjoy it a bit more. You’re so right about the rich descriptions! Makes me feel like I’m in the book, experiencing everything. Still adjusting to the writing style, but I’m finding it more enjoyable fs
