What do you do when imposter syndrome tries to rain on the parade during a bad mental health day?

Do something small you know you can excel at. Make a great cup of tea or clean something really well. I find focusing on performing small tasks well makes the bigger tasks feel less out of reach ❤️

I’d suggest to acknowledge it (cause it’s asking for attention) but create distance by asking "Whose voice is this and from when?" Calm your body with long exhales, any other somatic tools to signal safety and to sooth. Do something you enjoy 💕

I remind myself that almost everyone has imposter syndrome, even people in the top of their respective fields.

Sometimes is good that you take a break, remind myself that is just for a moment and sometimes write what things I have done remind yourself that we own our victories and the experience, skills and learning are within you.

@mikhailgallo especially so! I did research on students with imposter syndrome/phenomenon and my professor was like, “oh, professors have it too — it gets worse the higher you go up the ladder”

Clean my room, or organize what’s in my control

I breathe deep, ground myself, engage a ton of self-compassion and ask myself, “if I didn’t worry about what people thought, what would I be doing?” and do that. And then I ask myself, “what evidence do I have for/against me actually being an imposter, and what percentage of people in the world also feel this way too?” and feel comforted by the overwhelming data. And then I ask myself, “what if I spent just as much time and energy being kind to myself and imagining the best case scenario too?” and let that energy take over. My brain is a magical self-fulfilling prophecy machine that loves habit, so it’ll always choose a familiar hell over an unfamiliar heaven. What I focus on is what found, and what I focus on a lot becomes true - so sometimes thinking the opposite, trying those thoughts on for size, and seeing what happens makes all the difference. If I want something I’ve never had I must be willing to do something I’ve never done, especially in the way I think. So have fun with it! Like, “What if it’s not fear/anxiety, what if it’s inner applause for my courage to try something new?!” 😉 Be kind to yourself! You’re enough simply because you exist. 😊
