Anything by David Leavitt, Armistead Maupin or Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. Though it is a collection of short stories, I highly recommend Leavitt’s Family Dancing. The stories are an insightful glimpse into the dynamics of the American middle class in the 90s. The novels in Maupin’s Tales of the City series are hilarious, plot-driven, page-turners that you won’t want to put down. They follow the lives of the main characters through decades from the 1970s to the present. Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room is set in 1950s Paris and is told from the perspective of a gay American.
