People are making fun of me cause I didn’t know the wicked story before the film lol. But they don’t understand that musicals in italy are not a thing and it’s kinda of a privilege even having the film in the original language.. btw we shouldn’t judge people for their ignorance in pop culture because there’s SO MUCH to discover yet.

Yeah, I get the same for not liking Kylie. For a community that speaks loudly about understanding and acceptance, there’s a whole bunch of tribalism and expectation about what’s acceptable in terms of pop culture, and what isn’t. Keep dancing to your own beat!

sometimes the gays forget there’s no one, monolithic gay pop culture 🤷‍♂️ there might be a lot of western / Hollywood influence but that’s not all of it.

@roast.rescue.repeat yeah I don’t wanna end up like that too with things I like. So I will always share EVERYTHING I love because what’s keeping me from doing that? feeling special for what? for who?

This is such hetero-coded* high school drama that we in the queer community adopt and cling to but it needs to go 💅 *because it’s built around scarcity and the whole who’s in / who’s out tribalism, instead of everyone just liking what they like and being supportive of each other

Yessssss 💯 💯 💯 🔥 🔥 🔥 to this. I remember being at a gay karaoke bar in Seattle once and these guys were like, “You don’t KNOW ‘Suddenly Seymour?’” (Mind you: I performed in local productions of Phantom of the Opera, Elton John & Tim Rice’s Aida as lead roles.) It’s like, don’t be an a$$hole dude; everybody’s cultural experiences are different. They deserve to be celebrated, not shamed if you’re not already “in the know.”

There is definitely a tendency to assume gay culture is a monolith and it’s sad, especially because that culture is becoming increasingly corporatised, mainstreamed, and dominated by multinational entertainment giants seeking endless growth and profit. Their version of LGBTQ+ culture is dominated by anglophone, heterosexual artists who are already popular and gay-friendly over other openly-gay artists who may not be as easily marketable. All that said, I love WICKED. It’s an amazing stage musical based on great series of books, and it been adapted into a visually stunning film. Personally, the stage musical is my favorite version, but that’s because I LOVE live theatre. It’s so exciting to see something live in which anything COULD happen, but that’s is pulled off flawlessly every show.

@hyperentity Yeah I’m actually not starting to reply anymore to people like that..But in order to heal they need someone to “guide” them too sometimes..or I’m too emphatic? ahaha

Doing that is only showing their insecurity and lack of an actual preference or taste about something. You’re good, you can like unlike know not know whatever you want ✨ PS. What’s a Wicked?

I live in the US and there’s a lot of references I don’t understand because I grew up in a different culture than the average person in the US
