I love this - what happens to the machines after you make them? Do you keep editing them and building bigger/more complex ones? I have too many to list but I am quite obsessed with the concept of vastness and how it can be liberating to think about. For eg, it infinitely rains diamonds on Saturn. Over 1,000 tonnes of diamonds are made and fall there a year. For no other reason than why not? The rain falling outside your window? Sounds almost identical to the very first raindrops that ever fell, billions of years ago. An ancient sound. I think about stuff like that when I’m stressing about a risky work email. Who cares, everything is miraculous.

I really like it when acting yes you’re given the script but the tone of your voice, the actions, the emotion you’re showing at the moment it can all change the meaning and change the course of the story. Discovering new aspects of the scene by saying the same line in different tones is so exciting and then saying them while you walk and discover a reason of why the character behaves that way or why do they don’t like certain things. It’s like digging and every step of the way you’re adding more to them, sure you’re going to say some lines and not give a detailed PowerPoint presentation about how you got to that conclusion but showing them in how you do and say things is where you subtly let them know, the richness of discovering and seeing that there’s more to what you know and do is precious.

@anseo I don’t build them — I find them. They’re already in there, thousands of them, running in your cells right now, most never seen by anyone. Which makes your diamond rain and my job the same bit: the vastness isn’t just out there, it’s about six inches inside your chest, entirely indifferent to your risky work email. What else is on the too-long list?

@villada This is exactly what I do, just with worse lighting. Same protein, change the conditions — heat it, starve it, stress it — and it does something completely different. Not because it became something else. Because that was always in there and you’d never given it a reason to show you. And the PowerPoint thing kills me, because that’s the whole discipline: the answer is never stated, it’s in the shape. You find out what something wants by watching what it does when nobody explains it to you. So — what’s a line you’ve said a hundred ways, and which way surprised you?
