What?! This is so fascinating but also … what?! In my little Canadian family (German/Ukrainian/Dutch/English), we open a gift on Christmas Eve. But most of the traditions have died with my generation as there aren’t enough kids and my sister hates capitalism.

In Ireland thousands of us go for a seaside swim on Christmas Day. Sometimes it’s for charity, but a lot of the time it’s just - because? The ocean is about 10 degrees and absolutely FREEZING. Quite a bracing wake up call after months of being warm and snug.

Incredible carp story ! 😍 For us every year, the family get together to make foie gras 3-4 weeks before Christmas. And the week before Christmas we bake an awful lot of Christmas cookies (sablés with cinnamon, with jam,etc…). And the Christmas Eve dinner is like an enormous amount of food, with appetisers, shellfish, smocked salmon, foie gras, traditionally poultry, and a lots of desserts (buche,etc…). That’s often the French way 🤗

In Catalonia (the region of Barcelona), we literally hit a log with a stick to ask it for presents 🎁 we call it “shit uncle” 😂

That is wild. In colombia we celebrate christmas all the night before. 24, not 25. We eat natilla and buñuelos, the softest dough i have ever known worldwide. And we sing and pray (culturally) the “novenas” which are like a colombian ritual to receive baby jesus 9 nights before christmas. Every night we gather around to sing, play little instruments, and eat special food and desserts (im not really catholic but i do it more culturally). The 24 is the last novena, and this is the only night where we can sing “noche de paz” (silent night). And then at midning we do the countdown like new year, but in 25. And then we distribute the presents and go to sleep. The next day (25) we dont do anything really special. We sleep until late hours.

Growing up my German family would celebrate St. Nikolaus Abend on the 5th by putting our boots outside. If you were good you got chocolate and nuts and oranges and if you’d been naughty you got tree branches for spanking

I’m from Quebec, the french speaking province of Canada. Our Christmas diner is similar to the American thanksgiving diner. Roasted turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, gravy. Dessert is sugar pie. Our family tradition is family supper on the 25th. I have a big immediate family, we are 5 kids, and now there’s 5 grand kids. We do secret Santa.

My extended family stopped doing gifts because I had so many cousins, the gifts would take up the entire living room! After the pandemic all the kids realized they’d rather spend time with family so now instead of gifts, we all get together and have Vietnamese food and tacos lol.
