What do we think of footballers that refuse to wear shirts with Pride Rainbow logo due to religious reasons, but happily wear shirts with gambling sponsors logos?

@ethantroy that’s fair, but playfully I was saying people will protest against the lgbtq community just to find out that they are “sucking dick” in the locker room to. They have a right to represent themselves however they see fit so I honestly don’t have a problem with it. Some days I want to rock my rainbow gear other days I don’t 🤷🏽‍♂️

@rickeyxo yeah I think this is a good discussion which then overlaps with the standards we hold different types of people depending on the extent of their public visibility. I, personally, think there is more responsibility for high-profile (such as footballers) than low-profile/ ‘normal’ (such as ourselves) people to openly support LGBTQ+ people and identities x

@rickeyxo I appreciate the discussion, just want to clarify this isn’t about optionally wearing “rainbow gear” like you or I may, this is about a public figure refusing to take part in a campaign to end homophobia, as that campaign clashed with his personal beliefs. That’s more than a boundary in how they choose to serve our community. Of course they have a right to do as they please, but it’s still homophobia regardless 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for the context, I think forcing someone to support something they clearly don’t care for is a dead end. People now want to identify this action and place a label on it. I don’t think it’s that’s deep to be honest. nobody can force me to represent a cause I’m not supportive of either.

Now the question becomes are we willing to support something beyond our religious ideology ? I think everyone should be against homophobia but how they choose to stand up against it is up to them. Him wearing that shirt would have been a +1 but he could be defending the community in other ways that we might not see in public. Idk that’s just my thoughts respectfully.

I don’t think we can or should force anybody to wear anything, to respond to some of the comments here, because the changes we should be making are structural and not on an individual politics level. That said, your point is obviously (I think) not about that; as a Catholic, I consider it ABSURD that anyone would refuse to wear something that affirms the dignity and equality of queer people on religions grounds while happily wearing not only gambling logos, but all sorts of sponsors that are harming the planet.
