For those on the spectrum, how did you find out?

I realized that not everyone is overly obsessed with a topic and doesn’t stop talking about it. That and non-linear thinking

I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, as in I got an actual diagnosis. However I’ve been suspecting it for a few years, since I listened to a podcast where they were talking and discussing with several people about what it’s like to live with ADHD. And I went “omg, that’s me!”. So I started searching and finally brought myself to see a specialist, which by itself took me about three years, because, you know, ADHD. And if it wasn’t for my healthcare provider who was following up, I never would have managed to do that. 😅

My totally normal, logical friend was diagnosed with ADHD. All the symptoms she rattled off were idiosyncrasies we shared, which made our friendship so great. After some therapy and a long wait I was diagnosed with ADHD too….as was my partner 😂

I noticing my housemate struggling with quirks during lockdown and started researching them to see what I could do to help her. That led me to ADHD and some - er self-reflection on my part 😅 Fast forward to today and we’ve both been diagnosed and call each other our Forgetful Friend™. It came as a surprise to everyone apparently because I “was good at school” 🥲

The past few years my husband had been going through the process for an autism assessment and earlier this year received his diagnosis, however now having supported him through this and been learning so much about neurodiversity there is a strong possibility I am also somewhere between adhd and autism so just beginning my journey to uncover it

My therapists told me... and it made so much sense. I was doubting myself a lot, cause I always felt kinda different and too much. It caused severe problems in different contexts... The diagnosis helped me to accept myself and to stop trying to change things that shouldn't be changed, because I see some traits as precious gifts now.

The pandemic and the lack of routine broke me completely down. At one point I thought I must have brain damage because I couldn’t hold a thought or spontaneously remember the names of my oldest friends. Every symptom I ever had but masked or invented a personalized system for over the years went through the roof. I was restless, had separation anxiety, went into a room and immediately forgot why I went there…when I got the diagnosis I had to go through my whole life again to order every situation I felt like an alien ever 🫠

I was never diagnosed although my therapists hints at it, there’s just certain behavior habits that make lot sense to me ones I started researching, it also helps that having a sister who’s a psychologist we discuss things of this topic often.

I found out by one of my parents, and some kinds of appointments. I don’t remember what the appointments where called, but there is where I really found out. It was a fully fun learning experience because I was diagnosed late, and my disability classes in school where teaching me at a level my brain was already past in development. Glad I found your account on here, makes me feel better on some society.
