I started watching Looking almost by accident. I’d just finished another very hyped series that’s currently dominating pop culture spaces, and I found myself strangely conflicted. I understand the appeal. It’s emotionally immediate, addictive, and designed to be consumed quickly. But on a structural and narrative level, it feels thin. Superficial. Built around trope recognition rather than genuine exploration. After talking with some friends, I started Looking, and the contrast was immediate. Looking is invested in character interiority, contradiction, and observation. Its writing allows space for silence, hesitation, and unresolved tension. People exist outside of romance, with desires that evolve and identities that aren’t reduced to who they’re sleeping with. The show isn’t chasing payoff. What frustrates me isn’t that people enjoy the shallow thing. Enjoyment is valid. It’s that we collectively elevate work that offers so little psychological and thematic depth, while stories willing to engage with complexity remain secondary.
